The ever-simmering tensions between Telangana government and Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan boiled over yet again on the eve of International Women’s Day as she charged the ruling BRS of humiliating her continuously on one pretext or the other.

Speaking at a function organised at Raj Bhavan, the Governor on Monday, 6 March, said that humiliating the highest office in the state and her personally has become a common occurrence.

“You are rewarding those who are humiliating the highest office in the state. By doing so, what message are you sending to the women of Telangana? They threw stones at me and you honour them with garlands?” she asked.

The Governor, however, said that she was not so weak-willed to be affected by the criticism.

‘Speck of dust’

“As women, we have to face challenges. Otherwise, we cannot move forward. Ignore criticism and move on. What will you do if there is a speck of dust on your clothes. Just dust it off and move on, right?” she asked.

Referring to the attacks  on her and the Raj Bhavan, the Governor Soundararajan said that the government should learn to respect women. She said she will not go on backfoot regardless of how many times attempts are made to crush her.

The Governor said that she is always with the women of Telangana.

“If anyone is suffering I am there for her. I am strong because of the women of Telangana. Though very bad words are being thrown at me, I am able to stand firm. What hurts me is that those who throw stones at me are being rewarded,” she said.

‘Trolled on social media’

Dr Soundararajan said that she is always trolled on social media, and warned them against continuing the practice. I do not buckle under attack or discrimination, she said.

The Governor disapproved of the state government’s attitude towards women.

“I have invited women ministers, mayors, and officials to the function. But none of them is here,” she said, implying that they were asked not to attend the event.

The Governor also recalled warning the state government of an increase in the number of suicides.

“The suicide by Dr Dharawat Preeti had upset me. She belonged to a tribal community. No matter what one can do, the void created by her in her family cannot be filled,” she said, recalling how she was humiliated when she went to the NIMS to inquire with the doctors about her condition and to tell them to take good care of her.

The function was attended by, among others, High Court Justice G Radha Rani, National Women’s Commission member Kushboo and actor Poonam Kaur.
