In a dramatic political upset, Zohran Mamdani, son of filmmaker Mira Nair, declared victory Tuesday night in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, following a concession from former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and first-term state assembly member, surged ahead in the vote count just hours after polls closed, taking a commanding lead over Cuomo, whose campaign was overshadowed by past scandals despite his name recognition and experience.

Though the final result will be determined through New York’s ranked-choice voting system, Mamdani’s lead appeared insurmountable, prompting his confident declaration before an energized crowd of supporters.

“I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City,” Mamdani announced to cheers. “I will be the mayor for every New Yorker — whether you voted for me, for Governor Cuomo, or felt too disillusioned by a long-broken political system to vote at all.”

Mamdani’s campaign focused heavily on affordability, housing rights, and economic justice — issues that resonated deeply with a broad coalition of younger voters, working-class communities, and progressives frustrated by establishment politics.

Cuomo, who had launched a high-profile bid for redemption, acknowledged defeat in a brief statement late Tuesday, marking a stunning fall for the once-dominant political figure.
