Textbooks to teach Governor’s powers, electoral bond verdict in Kerala schools

The 58th State Curriculum Committee meeting, chaired by General Education and Employment Minister V Sivankutty, on Friday gave the green signal for significant updates in school textbooks. Among the notable inclusions is a detailed lesson on the powers and duties of the Governor of an Indian state.

The chapter, titled ‘Democracy: An Indian Experience’, will feature in the second volume of the Class X Social Science textbook. It not only explains the constitutional role of the Governor but also touches upon crucial contemporary political issues — including the crisis phases in Indian democracy, the Supreme Court verdict abolishing the electoral bonds scheme, and the phenomenon of resort politics.

The revised textbooks, covering 95 titles for Classes II, IV, VI, VIII and X, will reach students before the Onam holidays.

In a bid to make higher secondary education more relevant, the committee has also permitted detailed classroom discussions to gather feedback from students, teachers and parents for revising higher secondary textbooks. Workshops at both district and state levels will follow.

The meeting also congratulated Kerala’s students, teachers and parents for the state’s outstanding performance in the National Learning Achievement Survey.
