Munambam land dispute

Several community organisations continued protests in Kochi over the Munambam land dispute, demanding the state government release the report submitted by the Justice (retd) C.N. Ramachandran Commission in May. The commission was appointed to study the long-standing land conflict between coastal residents and the Waqf Board.

Inaugurating a sit-in protest in front of the Ernakulam Collectorate, KRLCC vice president Joseph Jude urged the government to initiate discussions with residents based on the commission’s findings.

A march from the Municipal Office to the Collectorate marked the protest, joined by members of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council, SNDP Yogam, Kudumbi Seva Samajam, and various Latin Catholic groups.

Priests, laity, and leaders from Kudumbi, Vettuva, and Dheevara communities also participated.

The dispute affects 610 families in Munambam, with political blame games ongoing. The BJP has promised a resolution through the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, though critics dismiss it as a political gimmick. Justice Nair had earlier suggested the government acquire the land under the Waqf Act to end the dispute.
