Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has proposed converting the aquarium near Mysuru Zoo’s Karanji Lake into a penguin park, following expert recommendations.
Chairing the 159th Karnataka Zoo Authority board meeting, Khandre emphasised enhancing visitor appeal through modern amenities and new wildlife introductions.
He approved a 20 percent hike in entry fees at Mysuru and Bannerghatta zoos, rejecting a proposed 50 percent increase, and ordered safari ticket rates to remain unchanged.
A ₹20 crore bird sanctuary featuring exotic species is planned in Bidar, with a detailed project report underway.
Additionally, ₹2 crore has been sanctioned for Davanagere zoo development.
The minister stressed financial self-reliance of zoos over the next five years and mandated better facilities like clean water, restrooms, and seating.
Strict instructions were given to ban single-use plastic inside all zoos and biological parks. A survey on encroachments and urbanisation near forest zones is also underway.
