Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has written to the deputy chairman of the House on Friday, 1 August, raising concerns over the presence of CISF personnel inside the chamber during protests by the Opposition.
Writing on behalf of all Opposition parties, Kharge said, “We are astonished and shocked at the manner in which CISF personnel are made to run into the well of the House when the members are exercising their democratic right of protest.”
“We saw this yesterday and today as well. Has our Parliament been reduced to such a level> This is most objectionable and we condemn it unequivocally,” Kharge, also the AICC president, further stated.
Kharge further demanded that the deputy chairman ensure that CISF personnel did not troop into the well of the House whenever the members raised issues of public concern.
Sharing Kharge’s letter on X, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that “after the sudden and unprecedented resignation of the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, we are now seeing the takeover of the chamber of the Council of States by the personnel of the CISF”.
Later in the day, Trinamool Congress’s Rajya Sabha Parliamentary party leader Derek O’Brien also raised the issue.
Marshals (or CISF personnel ) pre-emptively barricade Well. AITC, DMK & AAP MPs BARRED from entering the Well. Never seen anything like this before. So scared to discuss SIR-vote chori. ModiShah, INDIA will fight U to the finish.
See U Monday,” he wrote on X.
