Maritime startups showcase innovations for Defence, Navigation, and Port Operations

A range of cutting-edge maritime technologies developed by startups – covering naval UAVs, underwater navigation, diver communication systems, port automation, and rotary stabilising systems – were showcased in Kochi, Kerala, at the Ushus Sangamam exhibition.

The event was hosted by Cochin Shipyard’s Dolphin Club and featured innovations incubated under its USHUS programme, in partnership with IIT Madras and IIM Kozhikode.

The exhibition drew interest from defence agencies, including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with several showcased solutions being considered for integration into ongoing DRDO projects.

The technologies aim to expand the scope of maritime innovation beyond the traditional focus on shipbuilding and repair – areas where Cochin Shipyard has longstanding expertise.

To strengthen the maritime innovation ecosystem, Cochin Shipyard has created a ₹50 crore fund under the USHUS initiative. So far, ₹6.9 crore has been invested in 16 startups, generating over 70 skilled jobs.

Through a structured support system, startups receive ₹50 lakh for product development, ₹1 crore for pilot testing, and further investment upon successful validation.

The initiative marks a significant push towards deep-tech development in India’s maritime sector and reflects a growing commitment to building a sustainable startup ecosystem in Kochi.
