Kochi police busted a major sex racket and rescued six young North Indian women, who were trapped in the guise of romantic relationships.

A man, identified as Akbar Ali of Mannarkkad in Palakkad, who lured the women and ran the operation, has been arrested at Edappally. He reportedly earned lakhs by operating the racket.

Four others, including an alleged client, have been taken into custody.

The women were lodged in a building near the South Railway Station. Police said a POCSO case would likely be registered since they suspected minors, too, were forced into the trade.

The racket operated behind 24-hour shops and allegedly has links to massage parlours across Kochi, many of which use misleading names to attract clients.

Authorities are continuing investigations based on the women’s statements. Personnel from Elamakkara and Kadavanthra police stations were involved in the operation.
