In a major step towards fast-tracking port-led industrialization in Kerala, the state government has reconstituted the Project Implementation Committee to oversee land acquisition activities linked to the Vizhinjam International Seaport project. The decision comes in the wake of a request from the Managing Director of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) to acquire 70 to 100 acres of land for developing a port-led industrial cluster near the port.

The 58th board meeting of VISL, in May 2024, had emphasized the need for a minimum land bank of 600 acres to attract gateway traffic and set up industries in the vicinity. These industries are expected to leverage the port’s strategic location for importing raw materials and exporting finished goods at globally competitive rates.

Following this, the government examined the proposal and extended the mandate of the Project Implementation Committee to cover all land acquisition activities related to port-led industrialization. The committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, includes Principal Secretaries of Finance, Revenue, Ports, Industries, and other key officials.

Vizhinjam port, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in May 2025 after completing Phase 1 with a capacity of 1 million TEUs, aims to triple its handling capacity by 2028, alongside completing last-mile rail connectivity.
