AMMA gears up for Historic elections on August 15

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is heading for a landmark election on August 15, with an unprecedented number of candidates in the fray. For the first time, a woman may lead the organization, as actors Jagadheesh and Shweta Menon are among several contestants vying for the president’s post.

Over five nominations have been submitted for the top position alone.

In total, more than 125 nominations were received until yesterday from AMMA’s 508 members. The final list of candidates will be announced at 5:30 p.m. today after scrutiny.

Notably, popular names like Kunchacko Boban and Vijayaraghavan have yet to file their nominations, though they were earlier considered strong contenders.

Actor Baburaj is contesting for general secretary, facing a challenge from Joy Mathew amid controversies and opposition.

Actress Ansiba Hassan is running for the joint secretary post and has defended the right of accused members to contest, citing political parallels. She also welcomed the surge in candidates as a sign of healthy democratic participation encouraged by the ad-hoc committee.

The upcoming polls will elect a new president, vice president, general secretary, treasurer, and executive committee members. This follows the mass resignation of the previous leadership, triggered by controversies around the Hema Committee report on sexual misconduct within the industry.

Actor Mohanlal, who served as president after the passing of Innocent, has opted not to contest this time, turning down a request from the ad-hoc committee to continue.
