Two tribal women were killed on Sunday, October 25, when a massive tree uprooted and fell on them amid heavy rains and strong winds while they were working at a cardamom plantation in Singukudi near Mankulam, Idukki.
The women were identified as Chilliyamma (50) and Veeralakshmi (52), residents of 50th Mile, in Singukudi.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred when the women, who worked at the plantation, were taking shelter under the tree during their lunch break amid heavy rain and strong winds.
Locals rushed them to Adimali Taluk Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.
Idukki was placed under orange alert for Sunday amid heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, caused by the cyclonic storms in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Idukki for October 26, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours at isolated places. Palakkad has also been placed under red alert for October 26.
A low-pressure area over the southeastern Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep region is contributing to the weather system. The trough extending from the associated cyclonic circulation passes through Keralam and reaches the coast of northern Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression on October 24 and move west-northwestward. It is expected to strengthen into a deep depression by October 25 and develop into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26. The system is likely to intensify further and move toward the central-western Bay of Bengal, near the Andhra Pradesh coast, by the morning of October 28.
