Synopsis: Kerala Police have booked 25 Central University of Kerala students for allegedly disrupting a Sahitya Akademi seminar on Vande Mataram. The students allegedly raised “Go Back” slogans, switched off the microphone and demanded that the seminar be called off. The SFI has opposed the programme, with state secretary PS Sanjeev alleging that the university administration was promoting a divisive agenda.

Kerala Police have registered a case against 25 unidentified students of the Central University of Kerala (CUK) for allegedly disrupting a national seminar on Vande Mataram at the university.

The Bekal police registered the case suo motu on Wednesday night, 7 October, on a complaint by Bekal Circle Inspector Ajith Kumar P, who was deployed for security duty during Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar’s visit to the campus.

According to the FIR, students belonging to different organisations gathered during a session by CUK Chief Proctor and Linguistics professor K Sreekumar and disrupted his presentation. The students allegedly raised “Go Back” slogans, switched off the microphone and demanded that the seminar be called off. Police said there was also a verbal confrontation between two groups of students.

The students have been booked under Sections 189(2), 189(3), 191(2), 223 and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to unlawful assembly, rioting and disobedience.

The seminar was organised by the Sahitya Akademi to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. Student organisations have protested against the programme.

SFI state secretary PS Sanjeev alleged that the university administration was promoting a divisive agenda through the programme. He also accused the Vice-Chancellor of being aligned with the RSS.
