INCOIS has warned of 1 to 1.5-metre-high waves and swell surge activity from 2.30 am on 26 September to 2.30 am on 28 September.
Kerala’s entire coastline has been placed on red alert following an INCOIS warning of high waves and sudden swell surges, or Kallakkadal in Malayalam, from the early hours of Saturday, 26 September.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of 1 to 1.5-metre-high waves and swell surge activity from 2.30 am on 26 September to 2.30 am on 28 September.
Low-lying coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to sea surges and inundation.
Special caution has been advised along vulnerable stretches in all nine coastal districts—from Kappil to Pozhiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappad to Edava in Kollam, to Chellanam–Azheekal Jetty in Alappuzha, Munambam–Maruvakkad in Ernakulam, Aattupuram–Kodungallur in Thrissur, Kadalundi Nagaram–Palapetti in Malappuram, Chombala–Ramanattukara in Kozhikode, Valapattanam–New Mahe in Kannur and Kunchathur–Kottakkunnu in Kasaragod.
Fisherfolk and coastal residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
Avoid launching or landing fishing vessels during periods of intensified wave activity.
Fishing boats and canoes should be securely moored inside harbours, with adequate spacing to prevent collisions, while fishing gear should also be secured.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to relocate if instructed.
Beach tourism, recreational activities and trips to the sea should be completely avoided until the warning is withdrawn.
People have also been cautioned about possible coastal erosion.
Similar warnings have been issued for the coasts of Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, as well as Lakshadweep.
