The Ernakulam Additional District and Sessions Court has rejected the bail pleas of Suhail Sajeev, the prime accused in the Nedumbassery vehicle accident case, and three of his friends.

The four accused — Suhail, Ninav, Ameer and Joel — had approached the District Court after the Angamaly Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, presided over by Samyuktha M.K., on 17 October, dismissed their bail applications earlier.

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that the accused were influential individuals and that further investigation, including evidence collection, was still pending.

It maintained that they should remain in custody to ensure the investigation proceeds without hindrance.

Police had earlier obtained mobile phone footage showing prime accused Suhail Sajeev allegedly driving at nearly 160 kmph moments before the Nedumbassery accident which killed three persons.

Recorded by a friend travelling in the car, the video, captured about a minute before the crash, shows the speedometer crossing 140 kmph before approaching 160 kmph.

Investigators also produced an audio clip allegedly sent by Joyal, who fled the scene after the accident, to a friend.

In the recording, he reportedly says Suhail was heavily intoxicated and driving at high speed when the car hit three youngsters.

The clip also captures Joel saying that he had called his father immediately after the incident.

The accident

The accident occurred around 1.45 am on October 11, near the Athani-Valepuram area on Nedumbassery Airport Road.

Three youngsters identified as Devika alias Kukku (21) from Kalpetta in Wayanad, Gopika (21) from Edakkurissi in Mannarkkad, and Iyas (21) from Karnataka’s Sullia were killed in the crash.

Suhail, a B.Com student at a private college in Kochi, was detained by locals and handed over to the Nedumbassery police after getting into a verbal altercation with people at the scene following the crash.

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against him under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
