Synopsis: Keralam police have arrested two 19-year-old men and detained a minor for allegedly sexually assaulting a Class 9 student in Mannanthala, Thiruvananthapuram. The two adults were remanded in judicial custody, while the minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board after police registered a case under the POCSO Act. The incident came to light during a school counselling session earlier this week when teachers noticed signs of depression in the survivor.

Adil and Jarib, both 19 and from Mannanthala, were arrested on Thursday, 24 September, and produced before a local court, which remanded them in judicial custody. The third accused, a minor, was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
One of the accused had allegedly contacted the survivor through Instagram in January. He allegedly gained her confidence and later took her to a house in Mannanthala.
Two others, including the minor, were allegedly present at the house, where the survivor was sexually assaulted, according to the police.
Police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after recording the survivor’s statement before a magistrate.
The survivor had not disclosed the incident for several months, reportedly out of fear. It came to light earlier this week after her teachers noticed signs of depression. At a subsequent counselling session, she told her teachers and counsellors about the ordeal.
The school informed her parents, following which the school authorities and the family approached the Mannanthala police and lodged a complaint.
