Synopsis: Based on the officers complaint, Mattancherry Police registered a case. Thanzeer, who is in judicial custody in a case from Thoppumpady police station, is reportedly wanted in multiple criminal and narcotics-related cases.
A routine inspection at the Mattancherry Sub Jail turned violent on Wednesday, 24 December morning after a remand prisoner allegedly attacked two prison officers, leaving both with fractured hands.
Police said the incident occurred around 7.30 am near the guard office when the prisoner, Thanzeer, was asked to return to his cell after breakfast.
He allegedly became aggressive, picked up an iron lid from a drinking-water container, and assaulted Assistant prison officers Rijumon and Binu Narayanan. Both the officers suffered fracture to their right hands during the attack. The accused is also said to have threatened to kill the officers after his release.
Based on the officers complaint, Mattancherry Police registered a case. Thanzeer, who is in judicial custody in a case from Thoppumpady police station, is reportedly wanted in multiple criminal and narcotics-related cases.
Police said his formal arrest in the assault case will be completed after obtaining court permission.
According to OnManorama, the police have booked the accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including charges of voluntarily causing grievous hurt (Section 118(2)), causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from duty (Section 121(2)), assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty (Section 132), and criminal intimidation (Section 351(2)).
Both injured officers are currently undergoing treatment.
