Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Friday affixed a summons at the residence of Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan at Bakery Junction after the staff declined to accept it.

The summons directs Vijayan to appear before the agency on October 23 for questioning in the CMRL-Exalogic case.

Vijayan is currently in Kannur, according to former minister V Sivankutty, who reached the residence after learning about the incident. His family members were also absent when the ED officials arrived.

The ED has also sent the summons by post.

According to Sivankutty, the ED team visited the residence three times. The officials initially left after being informed that Vijayan was away. They returned later and informed the staff of their intention to affix the summons, but the staff refused to accept it or sign as witnesses.

The officials subsequently returned with police personnel and affixed the notice to a pillar outside the house. Three police officers were present as witnesses, Sivankutty said.

Questioning the need for such a move, Sivankutty said Vijayan was not someone who could not be traced and that the notice could have been delivered in person.

He described the ED’s action as unjust and anti-democratic and alleged that the state government was complicit in the proceedings.

The summons comes as Vijayan and others have approached the Supreme Court challenging the Vigilance FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act in the CMRL-Exalogic case. The FIR forms the basis of the ED’s proceedings in the case.

Sivankutty also questioned the ED’s decision to summon Vijayan for questioning while the matter is before the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the CISF has been requested to strengthen security at the ED office in Kochi on 23 October in view of the proposed questioning of the former Chief Minister.
