The alleged mistreatment of a three-year-old girl at an Anganwadi in Pramadom, Pathanamthitta, who was reportedly made to remove her clothes and clean up her own vomit while suffering from fever, has prompted the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to register a suo motu case.

The incident allegedly took place on September 1 at an Anganwadi in Vattakkavu ward of Pramadom panchayat.

According to the complaint, the child vomited while attending the centre with symptoms of fever. The Anganwadi worker allegedly made her remove her clothes and mop the floor where she had vomited.

The family reportedly learnt of the incident through local residents and later sought details from the child.

A temporary helper who had worked at the Anganwadi has also given a statement against the worker, according to the complaint.

Acting on media reports, the Child Rights Commission registered the case through its Acting Chairperson, Sicily Joseph.

It has sought reports from the Konni Station House Officer, the district officer of the Women and Child Development Department and the District Child Protection Officer.

The incident has also triggered concerns among parents over the alleged behaviour of the Anganwadi worker.

The mother of another child claimed that children were afraid to attend the centre and were threatened if they failed to sleep during afternoon nap time. She also alleged that her daughter had witnessed a child being made to mop the floor.

The number of children attending the centre has reportedly fallen from ten to four.

A preliminary inquiry was conducted by the Child Development Project Officer about a week after the complaint was raised.

However, parents have alleged that no effective follow-up action has been taken against the worker.
