A 19-year-old student from Kollam, who had travelled to the United Kingdom in September to pursue nursing at the University of Surrey, died after collapsing at her residence, barely weeks after arriving in the country.

Nandana Jinu, daughter of Jinu P, a Sub-Inspector at the Kollam Rural SP Office, and Dhanya NR, was found collapsed on her bed after going to her room to rest following dinner. She later died. The exact circumstances of her death are being investigated.

A native of Nandanam, Chettiyarkonam, in Kadakkal, Nandana reached the UK on September 21 after securing admission to the University of Surrey.

She had been staying close to the university.

She went abroad through a private educational agency based in Ernakulam.

Before leaving Keralam, she had completed her Plus Two at Government Higher Secondary School, Kadakkal, with distinction.

News of her untimely death has plunged her family and the local community into grief. Nandana had set out for the UK with aspirations of building a career in nursing.

Efforts are being made to bring her body back to Keralam. University authorities and Malayali organisations in the UK, including the Union of UK Malayalee Associations (UUKMA), are assisting with the arrangements.

Nandana’s paternal niece and her family also live in the UK.

Nandana is survived by her parents, her sister Gopika and brother-in-law Arun.
