India’s first indigenously developed and built hydrogen fuel cell ferry in Kochi, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 28 February, has zero emission and zero noise and can reduce the impact of global warming.

According to Cochin Shipyard, which constructed the fuel cell ferry, the adoption of green hydrogen as a maritime fuel is at the forefront of India’s commitment to a sustainable future that aims for net zero emissions by 2070.

The initiative

  • Cochin Shipyard announced the launch of an inland waterway vessel as part of the Harita Nauka (green boat) initiative, which aims to demonstrate technology for the maritime sector.
  • The vessel, powered by fuel cells, is a pilot project showcasing zero emissions, zero noise, and high energy efficiency, contributing to the reduction of global warming effects.
  • Cochin Shipyard undertook the ambitious project in alignment with the Government of India’s green vision to design, develop, and construct India’s first fully indigenous hydrogen fuel cell catamaran ferry vessel.
  • Prime Minister Modi attended the ceremony virtually from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
  • Madhu S Nair, Chairman and MD of Cochin Shipyard, led the inaugural session.
  • Other dignitaries present at the event included Lok Sabha Member Hibi Eden, Sreejith Narayanan (Director-Operations), Jose VJ (Director-Finance), and Bijoy Bhaskar (Director-Finance).
