Veteran journalist, political analyst and former Director of the Thiruvananthapuram Institute of Journalism, NRS Babu, passed away at 85, on Friday, 19 June, drawing tributes from across Kerala’s political and media circles.
Widely respected for his contributions to political reporting, investigative journalism and media education, Babu was regarded as one of the most influential journalists of his generation. Babu was also the teacher and guide for many of the present-day journalists in Kerala.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan expressed deep sorrow over the demise, describing NRS Babu as a pioneer in political analysis and a journalist who helped pave the way for investigative journalism in the state.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister recalled Babu’s ever-present smile, his human-centred approach to news, and his ability to offer authoritative insights on public issues.
Satheesan said he had known Babu personally since his early years in public life and that the veteran journalist later became a close friend and trusted adviser.
“His demise is a great loss to the field of journalism,” he said, extending condolences to the bereaved family and friends.
Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan also condoled Babu’s death, calling him a distinguished journalist who made significant contributions to Kerala’s media sector.
Vijayan noted that Babu had earned prominence as Deputy Editor of Kerala Kaumudi and Editor of Kala Kaumudi, while also playing a vital role in shaping a new generation of journalists through media education.
Describing his death as a major loss to the media world, Vijayan said he shared the grief of Babu’s family, friends and colleagues.
