Union health minister seeks Brahmapuram fire fallout report from Kerala

Nearly 12 days after the Brahmapuram fire, the Union health minister on Monday, 13 March, extended support and sought a report from the Kerala government.

Taking to Twitter, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, “Have asked Kerala State Government to submit a report on the incident of fire at #Brahmapuram waste dumping yard in Kochi. Centre will support the State to ensure public health measures. [sic]”

Meanwhile, slamming the Kerala government over the fire mishap, Opposition leader VD Satheesan said in the Kerala Assembly on Monday that a health emergency should have been declared in Kochi.

He even took a dig at Kerala Health Minister Veena George for asking people to wear masks to keep them safe 10 days after the “poisonous smoke” emanating due to the Brahmapuram fire engulfed Kochi.

He said, “On the third day of the fire breakout, she said that there were no health issues in the area. On what basis did she say that?”
