Shyamsundar, a migrant worker from Murshidabad, West Bengal, who has been living in Kerala in search of work has reportedly been living in a Kennel for the past three months, as he was unable to afford the rent for a house.
The kennel is part of a house that is being rented by other migrant workers. However, Shyamsundar, also a migrant worker has been living in the kennel by paying a rent of ₹500, as he is unable to afford the rent being paid by other workers. However, the house owner claimed he didn’t know about this. The incident has been reported from the Piravom Town, in Ernakulam.
Following the new reports, Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered a probe into the matter. The minister has directed the Labour Commissioner to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation by municipality officials and police revealed that Shyamsundar had been living in the kennel for the past three months. During a visit to the site, officials found cooking arrangements, indicating that Shyamsundar had been residing there for an extended period.
According to officials, Shyamsundar claimed that he had chosen to live in the kennel voluntarily due to his inability to afford rent expenses and refused to file a complaint.
As Shyamsundar has chosen to live in the kennel on his own, the police are deliberating on what actions, if any, to take.
The police took a statement from him, and no legal action has been taken against the person involved.
In the meantime, Shyamsundar has been shifted to Piravom town, where his brother-in-law lives. Piravom MLA Anoop Jacob too visited the place.
