The issue of human-animal conflicts continued to haunt Kerala as two elderly persons lost their lives in attacks by wild animals in Kozhikode and Thrissur districts, respectively, on Tuesday, 5 March.

Despite being rushed to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

In Thrissur, a 62-year-old woman named Valsa, wife of a local tribal chief Rajan from Vachumaram area, was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in a forest area near Athirappally on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 3.30 pm while she was collecting forest resources.

Valsa’s body has been moved to Taluk Hospital Chalakkudy for a post-mortem examination, police added.

The incidents occurred a day after an elderly woman died in a wild elephant attack in Idukki district.

The 72-year-old woman, identified as Indira, was trampled by the elephant at Kanjiramveli near Adimali on Monday.

Three men were killed in Wayanad in separate wild animal attacks since 30 January.

The woman, while being chased by the boar, jumped on top of the well which was covered by a wooden plank, which broke and she fell inside, a fire and rescue officer said.

The incident occurred around 4 pm on Monday and in the evening her family lodged a missing complaint with police, the officer said.

Subsequently, everyone began searching for her, but she was not found till this afternoon, when someone heard her shouts from inside the 50-feet deep well, he said.

Thereafter, fire and rescue was called and a unit arrived at the scene from the Adoor fire station.

According to visuals of the rescue operation, the fire force personnel dropped a net attached to ropes into the well and after the woman got inside it, they pulled her out.

“As she jumped onto the middle of the plank, when it broke she fell right down the middle of the well and did not suffer any serious injuries. She was a bit cold as she spent such a long time in the water and otherwise, appeared fine during the initial examination,” the officer said.

The woman was admitted to a taluk hospital and her health condition was fine, he said.

Cong MLA’s bail extended

The Congress MLA confirmed that he and Shiyas were granted relief by the court and said that the matter would be heard again on Wednesday, 6 March.

Both of them were arrested on Monday night by the police in connection with the alleged untoward incidents during a protest at Kothamangalam near here.

Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters at the protest venue in Kothamangalam, Kuzhalnadan said non-bailable provisions of IPC, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and Kerala Health Workers’ Act were invoked against them.

He claimed that it was the police which provoked the protestors three times.

“In view of the unwarranted police action, we will strengthen our protest. They wanted to jail me for at least a day, but it was unsuccessful. The government has been working for sometime to target me,” he alleged.

Kuzhalnadan also said that he and Shiyas were initially granted interim bail by the court in the wee hours of the morning and the matter was going to be heard again during the day.

Later in the evening, Kuzhalnadan said that the court extended the relief till Wednesday morning when it will hear the matter again.

The protest

The protest on Monday was led by Kuzhalnadan and Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose with hundreds of locals joining in.

They refused to hand over the body of the elephant-attack victim, Indira Ramakrishnan, for post-mortem.

A scuffle broke out with the police during the protest.

According to the police, the body was forcibly taken from the mortuary for the protest.

However, the victim’s husband told the media today that he and his son consented to the body being used for the protest.

The 70-year-old woman died after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Kanjiraveli area in Idukki on Monday.

She was trampled by the elephant while serving breakfast for her husband in a rubber plantation near the forest area.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Kothamangalam, she succumbed to her injuries.
