Three migrant workers died after a 40-year-old two-storey building collapsed in Kodakara in the Thrissur district of Kerala on the morning of Friday, 27 June, reportedly due to heavy rainfall.

The building housed migrant workers, most of whom had left for work at the time. When the building collapsed, most people inside ran out to safety, but three of them were trapped inside as the ground floor partially caved in.

Meanwhile, there has been confusion regarding the number of people who were residing in the building. While the contractor, under whom they were employed, said there were 10 people, the Fire and Rescue personnel said there were 17. Police said a total of 12 people were in the building when it collapsed.

However, Vice President of Kodakara Grama Panchayat Rajeesh KG told South First that there were 30 people.

The collapse

Fire and Rescue teams and police, assisted by locals, took part in the search and rescue operations at the site. However, the trapped people could not be saved. According to reports, the building collapsed at 6 am on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as West Bengal natives Rahul, Roopel and Alim.

When South First contacted Rajeesh soon after the collapse, he had said, “A total of 30 people had been staying in the house. But due to the rain, many didn’t have work as most of them were construction workers, so they went back to their native places.

“Two people have been admitted to the hospital, and their condition is critical due to low heart rate. One person has just been pulled out from the debris, but the chances of survival are slim. We are waiting for the official report from the hospital, he added.

Meanwhile, the Tahasildar has summoned Labour Department officials seeking an explanation.

Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered a probe and directed the Labour Commissioner to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and submit a report. The minister also added that the Labour Department will take necessary steps to repatriate the bodies of the workers to their native places.
