Two injured after iron rod falls from under-construction building at Kollam railway station

Eyewitnesses said two iron rods fell from the third floor of a four-storey parking facility being constructed adjacent to the station.

Synopsis: Two passengers sustained serious head injuries after an iron rod fell on them from a building under construction at the Kollam railway station premises.

Two passengers sustained serious head injuries after an iron rod fell on them from a building under construction at the Kollam railway station premises in Kerala on the morning of Friday, 11 July.

The injured have been identified as Sudheesh (40), a resident of Puthenveetil in Neeravil, and Ashalatha (52), a native of Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram and a teacher at LVHS, Mynagapally near Kadakkal.

The incident occurred around 10 am when the duo was exiting the station after arriving by the Chennai Mail.

The incident

Eyewitnesses said two iron rods fell from the third floor of a four-storey parking facility being constructed adjacent to the station.

The rods first hit a sheet below and then landed on the passengers. Both were rushed to the district hospital with serious head injuries.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the woman sustained heavy bleeding from her head. Preliminary reports indicate that the mishap occurred due to inadequate safety measures at the construction site.

An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the rods slipped from a worker’s hand.
