Synopsis: Five UDF workers were arrested for allegedly attacking police and throwing explosives, while cases were registered against 700 people, including Shafi Parambil. UDF leaders accused the police of biased action and acting under CPI(M) influence.
Two Deputy Superintendents, Vadakara’s Hariprasad and Perambra’s Sunil Kumar, have been transferred following the Perambra clash in which MP Shafi Parambil was injured.
Hariprasad was moved to Kozhikode North and Sunil Kumar to the Kozhikode District Crime Branch.
Though their names appeared in the latest transfer list, officials said the reshuffle was part of the routine changes ahead of the local body elections.
The Congress alleged that police hurled explosives during the clash connected to the Perambra CKG College hartal and later released visuals to support the claim.
Meanwhile, five UDF workers were arrested for allegedly attacking police and throwing explosives, while cases were registered against 700 people, including Shafi Parambil. UDF leaders accused the police of biased action and acting under CPI(M) influence.
On 10 October, the UDF march in Perambra had turned violent following clashes with LDF protesters and police. A police tear gas shelling and baton charge ensued, during which several people, including Shafi Parambil, were injured.
DySP Hariprasad and about ten policemen also sustained injuries. The DySP, who suffered a hand injury, has been admitted to hospital.
The incident is linked to tensions that have been simmering since the college union elections at Perambra CKG College.
The trouble began when the police stopped the UDF’s victory celebrations after the organisation won the chairmanship post in the college elections.
Several workers were injured during the subsequent confrontation in Perambra town. Following the incident, the UDF had called for a hartal.
As part of the protest, UDF workers, including Shafi Parambil, took out a demonstration on 10 October.
At the same time, CPI(M) workers also announced a march alleging that Perambra panchayat president V.K. Pramod was attacked during the hartal.
Tensions escalated when both marches converged at the same time, leading to stone-pelting and a scuffle.
