Thrithala set to become a tuber-growing village; Minister M.B. Rajesh inaugurates project
Thrithala in Palakkad district is gearing up to transform into a tuber-growing village as part of a new agricultural initiative led by 50 Scheduled Caste farmers.
Each farmer will cultivate 25 cents of land with support from the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Sustainable Thrithala Project, the Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers Welfare, and the Department of Local Self-Government.
Minister for Local Self-Government, Excise and Parliamentary Affairs M.B. Rajesh inaugurated the district-level launch of the “Seed Gram 2025-30” project on Saturday at the Thrithala Block Panchayat Hall.
The minister lauded Susthira Thrithala as a model for water conservation and agricultural prosperity, noting its success beyond Kerala.
CTCRI will provide seeds and necessary equipment for cultivating potato, cassava, sweet potato, koorka (Chinese potato), and yam.
The produce will be procured at fair prices, and seed villages for tuber crops will be developed across all panchayats in the block.
An agricultural exhibition was also organized to showcase new tuber varieties, farming technologies, and value-added products. Block Panchayat President Regina V.P. presided over the event, which saw participation from scientists, officials, and local farmers.
