Synopsis: Rescue operations were carried out by local residents, the fire and rescue services and the police. The car was badly mangled in the collision. After the fire and rescue personnel arrived, the vehicle was cut open to extricate the occupants trapped inside.
Eight people, including seven engineering students from Tamil Nadu, were killed after a car rammed into the rear of a parked lorry on a section of the national highway under construction near Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district around midnight on Friday, 4 September.
The accident occurred when the seven-seater car, bearing a Tamil Nadu registration and reportedly travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur, crashed into the back of a Maharashtra-registered goods lorry parked along the road.
Preliminary reports suggest that the car was travelling at high speed.
The impact was devastating. Seven people died at the scene, while another person who was seriously injured was taken to hospital but later succumbed to the injuries. All eight occupants of the car have therefore died.

An identity card recovered from the wreckage indicated that the victims are students of PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul.
The deceased have been identified as Vishwa of Salem, Surya of Dindigul, Santosh of Madurai, Prasanna of Madurai, Yuvasanjith of Dindigul, Joshua Hilson J, Murali Krishnan M, and Jeeva N.
The bodies of all eight victims have been shifted to the Thrissur Government Medical College mortuary for identification and further procedures.
According to local residents, accidents are frequent in the area, where construction work is underway on the national highway. Three lorries were reportedly parked along the roadside at the time of the accident. The lorry hit by the car was allegedly parked in the same direction as the traffic and at a location where road construction was in progress.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the crash, including the possibility that excessive speed and the positioning of the parked lorry on the road contributed to the tragedy.
