In a deeply disturbing case highlighting the dangers of superstition, police in Puthukkad, Thrissur district, have taken into custody an unmarried couple accused of burying the remains of two newborn babies as part of a ritual intended to ward off evil spirits.

The duo, aged 26 and 21, hailing from Vellikulangara, allegedly believed that collecting the bones of deceased infants would offer spiritual protection.

The shocking episode came to light on Monday evening when the man voluntarily walked into the Puthukkad police station carrying a bag containing skeletal remains of two babies.

Based on his confession, police detained both him and his partner. Preliminary investigations suggest the couple acted under the influence of superstition.

The first incident reportedly occurred three years ago after the birth of their child. According to the woman, the baby died shortly after birth, following which the couple buried the body with the intention of later retrieving the bones for ritualistic purposes.

Police have launched a detailed probe to determine the cause and circumstances of the babies’ deaths. Investigators are also examining whether the infants were born alive and if any foul play was involved.
