Three people were killed, and several others were injured after a sand-laden tipper lorry lost control and overturned onto a bus stop at Kottarakkara in the Kollam district of Kerala on the morning of Tuesday, 23 June.
Rescue operations are underway with fire force teams from Kundara and Kottarakkara, along with police personnel, working at the scene.
Preliminary information indicates that the speeding lorry collided with a bus while trying to overtake a motorcycle at around 7.15 am.
The vehicle then overturned, causing its load of sand to fall onto the bus stop and bury several people waiting there.
Authorities have confirmed three deaths, but the toll may increase as rescue efforts continue.
The victims have been identified as Harilal (54) of Lakshmi Cottage, Kudavattoor, Parthip (15) and Ajayakumar (45). Some were trapped under the sand and suffered severe injuries.
The injured have been identified as Kushal (15), Rishab Boban (15), Navaneeth (13), Jibimol (15) and Nisam of Chavara, the driver of the lorry.
The motorcycle rider involved in the incident has not been located so far. Several people, including children, managed to escape after noticing the lorry losing control.
Residents said around 12 people were at the bus stop at the time, including school and college students. The crash also damaged a nearby shop wall and brought down an electricity post.
