The Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Thiruvananthapuram has achieved a remarkable milestone in the field of neuro intervention, performing procedures rarely attempted in the country, said the health department.
Since the launch of its Neuro Cath Lab — the first in India under a Neurology Department — in June 2023, the institution, stated the health department, has conducted 375 neuro intervention procedures, including 320 diagnostic cerebral angiographies and 55 therapeutic interventions.
Health Minister Veena George congratulated the Neurology Department for saving numerous lives through cutting-edge treatments.
Among the rare feats was the successful management of complex brain aneurysms and angioplasty on extremely thin cerebral vessels. The centre also performed embolization procedures for uncommon conditions like dural AV fistula, carotid cavernous fistula, and AVM.
The treatments, often costing lakhs in private hospitals, are offered free or at minimal cost under government healthcare schemes.
Notably, mechanical thrombectomy — a critical procedure for removing clots — has been performed even in patients aged over 90.
The GMCH has also established a comprehensive stroke centre, equipped with CT angiogram, a stroke ICU, and a 24-hour helpline.
Doctors emphasised the importance of reaching treatment centres within four and a half hours of stroke onset for the best outcomes.
