Custodial death

On Saturday, 4 May, the CBI arrested four Kerala police officers in connection with the alleged custodial death of 30-year-old Thamir Jifri in 2023.

The arrested were senior civil police officer Ginesh of Pallikkal, Malappuram, CPO Alvin Augustine of Neendakara, Kollam, Abhimanyu of Thamarakulam, Malappuram, and Vipin of Vallikunnu, Malappuram.

They were members of the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF).

Jifri died in police custody on 1 August 2023, a day after he was nabbed. Though the police had rushed Jifri, who collapsed at the station, to a hospital, he was declared “dead on arrival”.

The deceased and four others were first under DANSAF custody for allegedly possessing 18.84 grams of MDMA.

A later investigation found that the DANSAF officials had assaulted the men. They were later handed over to the Tanur police.

The post-mortem report also mentioned that Jifri had suffered serious injuries.

The Kerala crime branch initially handled the case, which was transferred to the central investigation agency on the directives of the Kerala High Court.

Jifri’s family had approached the high court seeking a CBI probe. They argued that they would not get justice if the Kerala police investigated the case against their officials.
