Suicide fallout: Kerala DSP booked for molesting detainee, taking bribes

The allegations resurfaced after the suicide of Cherpulassery SHO on 15 November, with details from his note emerging only recently.

Synopsis: A probe has implicated Vadakara DySP A Umesh in the 2014 molestation of a woman in custody while he was Vadakkenchery SHO. The allegation, aided by late SI Binu Thomas (who died by suicide), includes taking bribes to release detainees. Palakkad police chief has recommended action and the DGP is likely to register case.

A probe has named as accused Vadakara DySP A Umesh in an alleged molestation case involving a woman taken into custody years ago, when he was the SHO of Vadakkenchery.

Palakkad District Police Chief Ajit Kumar has submitted a report recommending action, and the DGP is expected to order a case and further inquiry.

The allegations resurfaced after the death by suicide of Cherpulassery SHO Binu Thomas on 15 November, with details from his note emerging only recently.

The incident dates back to 2014, when Umesh was Circle Inspector and Binu Thomas was Sub-Inspector.

According to the report, Umesh allegedly molested a young woman in custody, with Thomas assisting him. The duo is also accused of taking bribes from those detained for immoral activities and releasing them without filing cases.

The woman’s statement was recorded recently, forming the basis of the investigation report.
