The Tamil Nadu police on Friday, 27 September, apprehended a gang involved in ATM thefts at three locations in Thrissur.
The Haryana-based gang was caught by Tamil Nadu police while they were hiding in Namakkal. Authorities stated that this is the same group that had previously committed thefts in areas including Kannur.
They were reportedly trying to flee with the stolen money when intercepted. Police mentioned that the gang was armed with firearms, and a confrontation occurred during the chase before their capture.
Meanwhile, Thrissur District police chief Navneet Sharma IPS confirmed that a team from Trissur police will be moving to Namakkal to coordinate with the Tamil Nadu police on the arrest of the suspects in the robbery case.
The incident unfolded in Sannasiyappatti on Friday morning, causing alarm as the lorry nearly collided with schoolchildren.
The container trying to flee with the money sped off, leading to multiple vehicle collisions. Residents alerted the Kumarapalayam police, who pursued the vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the lorry, the driver abandoned it, revealing armed youths inside.
Upon surrounding the vehicle, six robbers attempted to attack the police, prompting officers to fire in self-defence, resulting in one robber’s death. The deceased’s body has been taken to Pallipalayam Government Hospital.
Traffic between Erode and Salem has been affected as police are investigating the incident.
According to a report by Onmanorama, a four-member gang broke open three ATMs at Mapranam, Kolazhy, and Shornur Road near Swaraj Round, run by the State Bank of India (SBI) using a gas cutter and made away with approximately ₹65 lakh in the early morning hours on Friday.
