Ignoring geriatric diseases, 78-year-old former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy walked alongside Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for about 3 km when the Bharat Jodo Yatra reached Purakkad in the Alappuzha district on Sunday, 18 September.

On finding the difficulties of the senior leader in walking alongside young workers, Rahul forced Chandy to travel with the yatris in a specially availed vehicle.

A two-time chief minister of Kerala, Chandy travelled in the vehicle till the day’s yatra ended at TD Medical College Hospital Ground in Vandanam.

Chandy had received the walkers along with other senior party leaders of the state when it entered Kerala at the state border in Parassala.

He had also turned up at many vital points when public receptions were accorded to it.

“It was my great wish to walk at least a few kilometres with Rahul Gandhi and other participants. I am happy that I fulfilled that wish. It is a mark of my solidarity with his cause,” Chandy later told reporters.

Thousands gathered on both sides of the road to receive Rahul and the yatra on Sunday when it continued the journey through the Alappuzha district.

In Kerala’s traditional rice bowl Kuttanad, he interacted with local rice farmers and lent an ear to their grievances.

The farmers explained that climate change-induced crises, plummeting prices, and lack of governmental patronage were hurting them.

At Thottappilly, the local action committee against unscientific mining of mineral sand on the Alapuzha coast held discussions with Rahul Gandhi.

He extended solidarity to their strike work.
