Synopsis: Harippad resident Savariya Basanth was an MBBS student in Uzbekistan, where her classmate, Sadarul Anam from Malappuram, allegedly hit her with a laptop. Savariya’s body has been taken for re-postmortem at Alappuzha Government Medical College following her family’s request. Kerala police have registered a case.
Savariya Basanth, a 21-year-old MBBS student from Harippad in Alappuzha, who was allegedly murdered by a fellow Kerala student in Uzbekistan, was subjected to severe assault before her death, her family has claimed.
They also alleged that the accused, Sadarul Anam, had repeatedly put pressure on her to convert to another religion, citing statements reportedly given by fellow students to investigators.
Following a complaint by Savariya’s father, Kerala Police registered a case. A second postmortem is being conducted at Alappuzha Government Medical College Hospital after her body was brought back to Kerala on Thursday, 9 July.
The family sought the re-postmortem, saying it would be difficult to obtain complete forensic records from Uzbekistan.
Anam, a first-year MBBS student from Malappuram studying at the same university in Bukhara, is in the custody of Uzbekistan police.
Investigators are awaiting the findings of the second postmortem as part of the ongoing probe.
Speaking to South First, Harippad Police Circle Inspector Shibu Viswanathan said an FIR has been registered for unnatural death and the investigation is underway.
