People protesting power outage at the government hospital
Patients, their families and bystanders at the government SAT hospital in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram protested on Sunday, 29 September, due to a power outage.
The outage in the state capital reportedly affected sections of the hospital that handle emergency cases involving pregnancy like critical pregnancy cases, and neonatal ICUs and incubators where newborns are admitted.
The hospital authorities however claimed that the outage was limited to only one block of the government SAT hospital. They said that sections where children were admitted and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) were unaffected.
Meanwhile, upon hearing about the protest, Kerala Health Minister Veena George and the Minister of Electricity K Krishnankutty held discussions and directed the Public Works Department to quickly intervene and resolve the issue.
Technicians assured that power at the emergency department would be restored at the earliest. A temporary generator system was also being set up. The Directorate of Medical Education also assured the protesting public that the situation will be resolved.
After three hours of power outage, electricity was eventually restored at the Thiruvananthapuram hospital.
After power was restored, Health Minister Veena George announced that a comprehensive technical committee has been asked to launch an investigation into the incident.
