In a significant development in the case related to the murder last week of Anu, a native of the Perambra area in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, the investigation team is said to have stumbled on crucial CCTV footage.

According to police sources on Tuesday, 19 March, the footage captured the suspect’s attire before and after the crime.

They said the visual evidence is expected to play a crucial role in establishing the sequence of events leading up to the theft-murder.

“In one of the clips, the accused Mujeeb was spotted riding a motorcycle towards the way Anu was walking. After some time, in another footage, he was spotted with wet trousers,” a police source told local reporters.

The police are of the inference that Mujeeb’s trousers got soaked as he dragged Anu to a stream with knee-deep water and trampled her to death.

Clothes found

Furthermore, the police revealed that the wife of the accused attempted to destroy evidence related to the crime.

She allegedly tried to burn the clothes worn by the suspect at the time of the crime, indicating a potential cover-up or tampering with evidence.

“When we arrived at the spot, she was trying to burn some clothes. It might be the ones the accused had worn at the time of the crime. We seized them and they will be sent for forensic examination,” said an officer to the media.

Four days of police custody

As the investigation into the brutal crime intensified, the Perambra First Class Judicial Magistrate court in Kozhikode on Tuesday sent Mujeeb to four days of police custody.

The police also announced plans to conduct an evidence collection drive with the accused at Kannur, Kondotti, and Valoor. They expect that this would help them gather crucial pieces of evidence that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the crime.

Meanwhile, the police are said to have found the gold ornaments robbed by Mujeeb from Anu.

“With the help of another person, Mujeeb sold it to a gold merchant at Kondotti for ₹1.7 lakh. He had robbed a gold chain, ring, anklets, and bracelet from the victim. Some of them were melted,” added the officer.

The case

The incident, which sent shockwaves through the community, occurred on 11 March.

According to police, Mujeeb offered Anu a lift and it turned fatal for her. It is said that Anu was waiting for a bus to go to the medical college hospital.

Reportedly, Mujeeb had offered to drop her off near her husband.

A day after she was found in a drain. At first, it was considered as a drowning as it was presumed that she had slipped into the drain, and fell unconscious, leading to the drowning.

Mujeeb is said to have committed this heinous act after robbing her gold ornaments.

“On the way, he stopped the bike at an isolated place and tried to snatch the ornaments she was wearing. We suspect that he drowned her in the stream and killed her before escaping with the gold ornaments,” police said.

But following some residents’ accounts that they spotted Anu riding a pillion that day, the police intensified the probe. The police also got suspicious of the fact that there was only knee-deep water in the drain and it was not enough to get drowned.

Subsequently, the postmortem report revealed that there were bruises on her body indicating signs of struggle.

The investigation surrounding the bike led to Mujeeb, a history-sheeter, as per police accounts. He was arrested on 16 March.
