Synopsis: PC Chacko, who joined the NCP-SP in March 2021 after quitting the Congress, was keen on replacing Forest Minister AK Saseendran with Thomas K Thomas.

PC Chacko, the state president of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), has decided to step down following differences within the party.

It is learned that he handed over his resignation letter as state president to Sharad Pawar on Tuesday, 11 February, evening. Chacko is also the national working president of NCP-SP.

Chacko was eager to replace AK Saseendran with Thomas K Thomas, Kuttanad, MLA, in the state Cabinet.

However, his move didn’t materialised as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was not eager to replace Saseendran.

The CPI(M) was also not keen on replacing Saseendran as Thomas has been facing several allegations.

At the same time, reports said Saseendran has extended support to Thomas to assume the post of state president.

NCP-SP leadership choose not to respond to the media regarding the developments.

Saseendran’s followers were campaigning for the removal of Chacko as the president. The Saseendran faction had stayed away from the party’s state executive meeting on 6 February.

A former member of Parliament, Chacko joined the NCP-SP after quitting the Congress in 2021.
