Kerala High Court refused to cancel dileep's bail in actor assault case

Kerala High Court on Friday, 18 November, issued a notice to Covishield manufacturer Serum Institute of India (SII), the government of Kerala as well as the Centre on a petition filed by the wife of a man who was allegedly paralysed after being administered the vaccine.

The petition, filed on Wednesday through advocates PV Jeevesh and Manasi Dheeraj, sought a compensation of ₹10 crore from SII.

What happened?

According to the petition, the man was administered the Covishield vaccine on 13 March, 2021, at Modern Hospital in Kodungalloor. A few hours later, he developed high fever of up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to various hospitals for treatment.

“Even though continuously he was diagnosed by various doctors, nobody could find out what was the exact reason for his medical problem. Now the person is completely paralysed. Without any changes in the physical condition of the patient, the patient was admitted in Indo-American Hospital at Vaikom,” the petition stated.

It was at this hospital that a neurologist undertook a thorough investigation and concluded that the patient was paralysed due to the administration of the Covishield vaccine, the petition said.

Facing acute financial issues

The petition said the victim’s wife had approached the district medical officer with her grievances, including details of the medical treatment her husband had undergone, and the financial issues faced by them due to the man’s condition.

As there was no action from the authorities, the petitioner said she was forced to approach the court for compensation and financial assistance for her husband.

Pune-headquartered SII is a biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals company that was founded by Cyrus Poonawalla in 1966 and was among the biggest suppliers of the Covid-19 vaccine during the pandemic.
