Panchayat ordered to compensate road accident victim with ₹22,500(iStock)
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed the Tholikode Grama Panchayat to pay ₹22,500 in compensation to a scooter passenger injured due to construction materials left carelessly on a public road.
The incident occurred on May 9, 2023, near the Mailamoodu transformer in Nedumangadu, injuring Smita Bhaskar. The Commission ruled that the Panchayat is liable for failing to ensure public safety, even if the contractor acted without prior approval. The compensation must be paid within two months or will attract 8% interest. The Panchayat may recover the amount from those responsible.
