The arrest

Mamkootathil, who was expelled from the Congress after sexual assault allegations surfaced, was arrested from Palakkad on the early hours of Sunday and was initially produced before the Pathanamthitta court, which has jurisdiction over the Thiruvalla Magistrate Court. He was later remanded to the Mavelikkara sub-jail.

The bail application and related case documents were forwarded to the Thiruvalla court from Pathanamthitta on Monday through a special messenger.

The police had said the case was registered after a young woman complained by email to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This was the third complaint filed against the MLA.

The complainant, a 31-year-old woman from Kottayam currently working in Canada, has alleged that she was raped at a hotel in Thiruvalla on 8 April 2024. In her statement given to the SIT via a Zoom video call, she stated that she became pregnant following the incident and later suffered a miscarriage.

Meanwhile, in his bail plea, the accused has claimed that the relationship was consensual and contended that the remaining allegations will not stand scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Mamkootathil production before the court triggered protests by DYFI and Yuva Morcha activists in Thiruvalla. Raising slogans for and against the MLA, protesters gathered near the court complex, prompting the deployment of a strong police force to maintain law and order.
