Odisha CID and Crime Branch IG Shefeen Ahmed K, IPS, passed away on August 31 while undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
A native of Keralam, Shefeen Ahmed, 50, was the son of prominent CITU leader KO Habeeb.
He pursued his engineering degree at the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, before joining the Indian Police Service (IPS).
A 2003-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, Shefeen Ahmed served in several key positions during his 23-year career.
His assignments included serving as IG in the Odisha Crime Branch, the Human Rights Protection Cell and the Cyber Crime wing.
He had also served on deputation in Keralam for an extended period. During his deputation, he held various posts, including Rural Superintendent of Police in Thiruvananthapuram.
Shefeen remained part of several important assignments during his long career in the IPS.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi offered his condolences.
“Deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Shefeen Ahamed K, IPS, IG of Police, CID, CB. His dedicated service to the state and Odisha Police will always be remembered,” said Majhi. “My heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor recalled his association with Shefeen during the officer’s deputation to Kerala.
“I came to know Shefeen during his deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural SP of Thiruvananthapuram. He was a thoughtful, unfailingly courteous officer with a fine mind, who wore his competence lightly.
“A son of the city, he went on to distinguish himself in Odisha, particularly in cybercrime and the Crime Branch, over more than two decades of service.
“Though he returned to his home cadre in Odisha, he never quite left Thiruvananthapuram behind, and stayed in touch over the years. That he should be taken from us so young, and in the city he loved, makes this loss all the harder to bear,” Tharoor remembered.
