Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan
Synopsis: On 13 June 2022, two Youth Congress workers, Farzeen Majeed and Naveen Kumar, reportedly approached Vijayan and raised slogans on board an IndiGo flight from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. A short video that was later circulated on social media showed a man, purportedly CPI(M) leader EP Jayarajan, pushing and shoving the protesters.
The central government has refused permission to file a chargesheet in a case of an alleged bid to assassinate Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on board an aircraft.
According to officials, the case cannot proceed under the Aircraft Security Act, which was invoked when the case was registered.
The Union Home Secretary has now sought the opinion of the DGP on the further course of action in the matter. Authorities pointed out that central approval is mandatory for cases filed under the Aviation Act, which is why the clearance was required before moving the case forward.
The decision comes three years after the incident, leaving many questions about the next steps in the investigation and prosecution.
On 13 June 2022, two Youth Congress workers, Farzeen Majeed and Naveen Kumar, reportedly approached Vijayan and raised slogans on board an IndiGo flight from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. A short video that was later circulated on social media showed a man, purportedly CPI(M) leader EP Jayarajan, pushing and shoving the protesters.
Jayarajan, who was then the LDF convener, termed the incident an “act of terror”.
Following the incident, IndiGo banned Jayarajan for three weeks from boarding its flights, while the Youth Congress workers were slapped with a two-week ban.
The incident occurred even as the Opposition and the BJP was seeking Vijayan’s resignation, after Swapna Suresh, an accused in the diplomatic bag gold smuggling case, linked the chief minister’s family with the illegal activity.
