Synopsis: The original camera negative of Kireedam had deteriorated beyond use. However, a 35mm release print preserved by the National Film Archive of India for more than three decades served as the source for the painstaking 4K restoration.
One of Malayalam cinema’s most celebrated classics, Kireedam, has been restored in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound by National Film Development Corporation–National Film Archive of India (NFDC–NFAI).
The restored version of the 1989 film will be re-released in theatres across India and overseas on July 10, 2026.
Presented by NFDC in association with Seven Arts International Ltd. and distributed by Hyzin Global Ventures, the restoration was undertaken as part of the National Film Heritage Mission.
The original camera negative of Kireedam had deteriorated beyond use. However, a 35mm release print preserved by the National Film Archive of India for more than three decades served as the source for the painstaking 4K restoration.
Directed by Siby Malayil and written by AK Lohithadas, Kireedam features Mohanlal as Sethumadhavan and Thilakan as Head Constable Achuthan Nair.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films in Malayalam cinema, it remains a landmark in the careers of its cast and creators.
Expressing his gratitude, Siby Malayil thanked NFDC–NFAI for preserving the film print and restoring it.
He said he hoped both longtime admirers and a new generation of viewers would experience the restored version on the big screen.
The restored Kireedam had its world premiere at the 55th International Film Festival of India, where it received an enthusiastic response from audiences and filmmakers alike.
