A new scheme aimed at the comprehensive development of coastal regions in Malappuram is set to be launched soon. Implemented under the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) in collaboration with various government agencies and local bodies, the five-year project will cover ten gram panchayats from Ponnani to Vallikunnu and three municipalities.

The scheme, modelled on NABARD’s Scheduled Tribe Development framework, will focus on employment generation, skill development, entrepreneurship, promotion of traditional industries, coastal protection, healthcare, and education. New-generation courses and entrepreneurship training for the youth, alongside programmes to revive traditional occupations, are key highlights.

A participatory learning project will be conducted in all local bodies, with policy study support from Nayaneethi Policy Collective and Susthira Foundation. The aim is to complete the study and launch the scheme by August 15. JSS Chairman PV Abdul Wahab MP chaired the review meeting, with officials and public representatives in attendance.

JSS scheme is one of three key schemes under the umbrella Central Sector Scheme ‘Skill India Programme (SIP)’ of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The target beneficiaries of the scheme are non-literates, neo-literates and persons having rudimentary level of education, school dropouts up to class 12th and graduates, in the age group of 15-45 years.
