A man hacked his live-in partner — four years his senior — to death during the morning peak hour at a busy junction on Thiruvananthapuram city’s outskirts on Thursday, 15 December.

Onlookers overpowered the man, identified as G Rakesh, 46, and rushed the woman to the medical college hospital. She died in the ambulance, the police said.

The police said the 50-year-old woman, S Sindhu, had reached Vazhayila by bus around 9.30 am and was proceeding to an employment consultancy firm when Rakesh attacked her with a machete.

The woman had been seeking a job as a home nurse in Neyyattinkara, a town adjoining the Kerala capital.

The police said Rakesh hacked Sindhu on her neck and head. He continued attacking even after she had fallen on the road and until local residents forcefully restrained him. He was later handed over to the police.

Eyewitnesses said the woman prayed for mercy with folded hands but the man ignored her pleas.

An ambulance was arranged to take her to the medical college hospital but she died of excessive bleeding. The police said she suffered at least 10 deep cuts on her neck and head.

The backstory

Rakesh hailed from Pathanamthitta, about 112 km from the state capital, the police said. He shifted to Nanniyode — some 45 km outside Thiruvananthapuram — after developing a relationship with Sindhu about 12 years ago.

Both Rakesh and Sindhu were married earlier and had two children each. They decided to live together after leaving their respective families.

Neighbours said Rakesh and Sindhu used to quarrel over money and property. Rakesh often accused her of misappropriating his wealth by faking love.

Rakesh was staying separately from Sindhu for a month after a mediation attempt by the local police had failed. Investigators expressed suspicion that the man committed the crime fearing that she would abandon him and take away his savings.
