Malayali man shot dead by Jordanian forces

Synopsis: A tragic incident occurred at the Jordan-Israel border when Gabriel Pereira, a Malayali man from Thiruvananthapuram, was shot dead by Jordanian forces while attempting to cross into Israel. Another member of the group, Edison from Menamkulam, was injured and deported to India. The group of four Malayalis attempted the illegal crossing, and Gabriel succumbed to head injuries. The Indian Embassy confirmed his death.

A tragic incident unfolded at the Jordan-Israel border when a Malayali man was shot dead by Jordanian forces while attempting to illegally cross into Israel. 

The deceased has been identified as Gabriel Pereira, a native of Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram. 

Another man from the group, Edison from Menamkulam, sustained a bullet wound to his leg and has since been deported to India.

The incident occurred when Gabriel and his group, reportedly four Malayalis in total, tried to cross the border from Jordan into Israel. 

Gabriel was shot in the head by Jordanian forces and succumbed to his injuries. His death was confirmed by the Indian Embassy. Edison, the other injured individual, was treated and deported back to India.

Local body representative Rexilin Mary spoke to South First, stating that Gabriel had traveled to Jordan on a visitor visa before attempting the unauthorised crossing. “It is deeply sorrowful,” Mary said.

Remaining members in Israeli custody

The remaining two members of the group are reportedly in Israeli custody, though their whereabouts and conditions remain unclear. Sources suggest they have been detained by Israeli authorities for questioning.

Indian officials are working to gather further details about the circumstances that led to the tragic incident and to provide necessary assistance to the affected individuals. 

The motives behind their attempt to cross the border remain unknown at this time.
