Padma Shri award-winning poet and literary critic P Narayana Kurup passed away in Thiruvananthapuram, leaving behind a rich legacy in Malayalam literature. He was 92.

Condolences poured in from across the state, with political leaders and cultural figures remembering his immense contributions to poetry, criticism, drama, music and philosophy.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan expressed grief over the demise of the noted writer.

In his condolence message, the chief minister said Kurup was a writer who offered new interpretations in Malayalam poetry and criticism.

He noted that Kurup’s clear and lucid language style set him apart from others.

The chief minister said the poet had authored many books that would remain treasured assets of Malayalam literature and recalled that he had received several honours, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award and the Odakuzhal Award.

“His demise is a loss to the Malayalam language,” Satheesan said, extending condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan also expressed deep sorrow over the poet’s death.

He said Kurup had left a lasting mark on Malayalam poetry and literary criticism and had made valuable contributions to drama, music and philosophy. Vijayan conveyed his condolences to the family and close associates.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar described Kurup as a rare genius who deeply absorbed the great traditions of Malayalam literature and left an indelible mark on poetry and literary criticism.

Calling his death an irreparable loss to Malayalam literature, the Governor said Kurup’s multifaceted scholarship in literature, music, Indian cultural heritage and philosophy was a valuable cultural asset for Kerala.

His contributions to Malayalam poetry, literature and culture would be remembered and cherished for generations, the Governor added.
